As Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein put it on Twitter Tuesday, we “almost lost the most popular TV personality at WSB-TV.”
Klein often jokes about how his chocolate lab Chewy is more well known than he is, but his message Tuesday was far from humorous.
In a tweet, Klein shared a message about how Chewy had gotten into some gum and nearly died.
Chewy has won the hearts of Channel 2 viewers since the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown in metro Atlanta where even the Channel 2 Action News crew started working from home.
Chewy would often be in the background of Klein’s sportscasts when he was reporting live from his home and everyone fell in love with Chewy.
Klein shared on Twitter that the gum Chewy had eaten had Xylitol in it, “which is extremely poisonous for dogs and caused Chewy to have a seizure.”
“I found him after he had a seizure… raced him to the animal hospital and got him there just in time,” Klein said.

He said things were touch and go for about 48 hours as doctors monitored Chewy for any liver damage or any residual effects from the chemical.
Klein said Chewy is home now and appears to be fine. He also warned of five things that his vet told him you should never give your dog:
- Xylitol
- Grapes/raisins
- Onions
- Garlic cloves
- Chocolate
“Our little furry family member is getting lots of attention and we are SO thankful,” Klein wrote.
