You’re not imagining it: Atlanta has some of the worst bottlenecks on roads in the US

ATLANTA — If you are one of the many Atlantans who thinks this city has some of the worst traffic in the world, you’re right.

A 2021 list of the worst truck bottlenecks in the country includes more than ever from Georgia this year.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach broke down the list from the American Transportation Research Institute, which included nine bottlenecks in metro Atlanta.

The list uses data from more than 1 million trucks that drove U.S. roads last year. Though drivers experienced a little bit of a break from heavy traffic during the pandemic, it’s back now with a vengeance.

“We have seen truck speeds slow in this year’s analysis because of the return of traffic post-COVID,” said Rebecca Brewster, president of the American Transportation Research Institute.

Researchers found average rush hour speeds for freight traffic drop to 36 mph in the bottlenecks. And if the trucks are slowing down in congestion, so are the rest of us.

The worst bottleneck in the world for the fourth year running is the George Washington Bridge in New York, which connects Manhattan to New Jersey.
