HBD, Ozzie! Zoo Atlanta celebrates 60th birthday of world’s oldest gorilla

ATLANTA — The world’s oldest living gorilla is celebrating a milestone birthday on Sunday, just in time for Father’s Day!

Ozzie, who is the oldest male gorilla on record, turned 60. The beloved zoo patriarch celebrated with a multi-tiered cake that he immediately toppled in its side.

Ozzie has more than 20 descendants including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that live both at Zoo Atlanta and other zoos.

He was one of the original residents of Zoo Atlanta’s Ford African Rain Forest. He shares his habitat with female gorillas Choomba (58), Machi (45) and Kuchi (36).

Gorillas are considered to be geriatric after age 40 so Ozzie lives in a habitat specifically configured for senior gorillas.

Western lowland gorillas are considered critically endangered. Zoo officials said Ozzie has made lasting contributions to the future of his species in his time at the zoo.
