B98.5's Kelly Stevens prepares for wedding

B98.5's Kelly Stevens says he has a new lease on life following a fatal crash involving a wrong-way driver. He and his fiancée are preparing to get married.

ATLANTA — B98.5 radio host Kelly Stevens is getting married this weekend, just two months after being hit in a fatal wrong-way crash.

Channel 2's Craig Lucie met Stevens and his fiancée, Katie Buser, while they were both getting a manicure and pedicure Friday before their big day. Stevens told Lucie he would much rather be doing something on his last day before becoming a married man but said this is what his fiancée suggested.

"I'm excited about the fact that we get a future together, and the fact that I can get a manicure and a pedicure, all by the graces from God," said Stevens.

Buser said she is frequently asked why she couldn't wait until after Stevens recovers to get married.

"It felt like the right thing to do. It's like you got a second chance at life, and this is his second start, so it's good for us to start as soon as possible," Buser said.

Stevens is still going to therapy three times each week for a shattered elbow and broken leg. Lucie was there when he proposed to Buser last month and then caught up with them again as Stevens went through therapy. His condition has improved greatly since Aug. 24 when police said 22-year-old Carly Royball hit him going the wrong way on Georgia Highway 400. Royball died and police later confirmed she had been drinking.
Stevens still can't walk.

"I'd liked to be able to lose the wheelchair as soon as possible. As soon as I can do that, I can manage driving," explained Stevens.

Until then, he'll be back on B98.5 broadcasting live from home starting Tuesday.

"I can't wait. It's been two months. It's been too long," said Stevens.

Buser said he would have been back to work long before now if his doctors would have cleared him.

"I'm really excited for him. He has been ready to get back on since the morning of the accident. If he could have gotten himself to the radio station, he would have been working that day," said Buser.

For now, Stevens is focused on Saturday, when he hopes to impress his wedding guests.

"I've been working this week to kind of give everybody a surprise by standing and maybe taking a few steps," said Stevens.
