BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. — The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and the County’s Board of Education Police Department just launched a new speed detection camera system.
The cameras were live for the first time Wednesday morning, during school hours, in the school zone area of Adairsville Middle and High schools.
Channel 2′s Michele Newell was in Bartow County, where she learned what speeders will pay when they’re caught.

A traffic speed study revealed an excessive amount of speed zone infractions during school hours.
Officers will only give drivers warnings during the first 30 days the cameras are active. After that, speed violators will have to dish out $75 for the first offense and $125 for any subsequent offenses.
They’ll also have to pay a $25 processing fee in addition to the fine, for each violation.

The school zone speed limit for the area is 25 mph when yellow lights are flashing and 35 mph when lights are not flashing.
Several people who live in the neighborhood are relieved that something is being done to make drivers think twice about speeding in a school zone.
“Since the cameras are in place that they’ve noticed a decrease in the speed in the school zones,” said police Chief Bill Henson of the Bartow County School System Police Department.
“There are three schools on this road alone so I mean it’s probably very beneficial,” said Casey Mitchell, who lives in the area.
