ATLANTA — The Atlanta radio community and listeners are mourning the loss of a beloved DJ.
Gary Mitchell, known as DJ Mix Master Mitch, died Tuesday morning after a battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Mitchell was 56.
DJ Mix Master Mitch was born at Grady Memorial Hospital and grew up in Atlanta. He graduated from Mays High School in 1983 and began his decades-long radio career.
Mitch entertained audiences on KISS 104.1 and Classix 102.9.
“I’ve always been an entertainer. I’ve always loved the microphone ya know I would get out there with promotions and get on the mic and act crazy and people would laugh,” Mitch told Channel 2 Action News earlier this year.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke with Mix Master Mitch and SiMan Baby in September after the cousins were both diagnosis with the same type of cancer.
Mitch first realized he was sick when he experienced rapid weight loss.
“I had stomach pain and that was really the kicker and one thing about pancreatic cancer - it’s so sneaky ya know - you don’t know you got it until like it’s in Stage 4,” he told Fernandes. “So I advise people to go get a CT Scan.”

A few months later, SiMan also started losing weight rapidly. He also learned he had stage 4 cancer. The cousins wanted to fight together and raise awareness.
“He said, ‘We should talk about it. We should use the platform that we have use our voices to share with some other people because ya never know it might serve somebody. It might help somebody,’” SimMan said. “And I think he was right.”
As of Wednesday morning, memorial arrangements for Mitchell have not been announced.
