ATLANTA — Police were in the woods next to a senior living community and a school, where, they told Channel 2 Action News someone found a body.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of M.L.K. Jr. Drive Southwest, near Atlanta Heights Charter School.

Police told Channel 2's Audrey Washington that family members had reported the woman, 30, missing on Tuesday.

Shakayla Herd was in the area for her 6-month old daughter's appointment at a health clinic.

"It's really scary for people that's not in this area to come over here. We have to watch out," Herd said. "It's a nice area. It's real quiet and you wouldn't have expected anything."

The woman’s boyfriend used an app called Find My Friends to find her location. Police say they found the 30-year-old woman dead with signs of blunt force trauma early Wednesday morning.

“He has a Find My Friends app on his phone and used that to get in the general area, and at that point, he began looking for the victim in the area,” Atlanta police Lt. Carven Tyus said.

Police said the boyfriend found the woman’s shoe near the trail and then flagged down officers.

Police said the boyfriend is not a suspect and is cooperating with the investigation.

“We'll be reaching out to family members, trying to ascertain where exactly the victim was, who she was last seen with, and we'll just seek help from the public in identifying what happened here,” Tyus said.
