Witnesses told police they could hear the men arguing and saw Montgomery punch and kick Cox before flipping a table and continuing to attack him.

After witnesses were able to pull Montgomery off of Cox, he left the home. Witnesses called 911 because Cox had been beaten unconscious. He later died from his injuries.

TRENDING STORIES:

Montgomery was interviewed the night of the murder, but did not tell police what happened during the card game to cause him to attack Cox. He was initially arrested and charged with murder.

Medical examiners determined Cox suffered blunt force trauma to the head and torso that led to his heart and lung being lacerated.

After receiving that report, investigators added a charge of malice murder to Montgomery.
