Carroll County mourns sheriff’s deputy lost to COVID-19

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — The Carroll County Sheriff’s office is mourning one of it’s own this weekend after he passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

In an emotional social media post, the department honored Deputy Jody Smith who died Friday night at the age of 49.

Smith worked for the Sheriff’s office for eight years and was remembered by his co-workers as the happiest person they knew. They spoke lovingly of his smile and laughter, and how his great outlook on life showed through his work and interactions with the community in which he lived.

Smith’s story is only one of the thousands impacted by COVID-19 in the state of Georgia. The Department of Public Health announced Friday that the state had passed the 20,000 mark in deaths due to the virus.

Carroll County has not released details on any services or memorial for Deputy Smith, Channel 2 Action News will update this story when we get that information.
