CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is recognizing one of their own after she saved a man’s life when she stopped at a gas station on her way home from work.

Deputy Amber Cardell was driving home from Bay Springs Middle School, where she serves as the school resource officer, last week when she stopped at a QuikTrip on Bankhead Highway.

When she went into the store, several people told her that a man was unconscious in the bathroom.

Deputy Cardell found a 51-year-old man unconscious against a bathroom stall and called EMS. While waiting on paramedics, she laid the man and recognized that he was showing signs of an overdose. She got her department-issued Narcan and sprayed it into the man’s nostril.

The man’s girlfriend reported that he had been using heroin.

Several minutes later, the man regained consciousness, but refused any more treatment. Deputy Cardell told him that the effects of the Narcan could wear off and it was possible he would overdose again. Despite this, the man was not cooperative with paramedics when they arrived on scene.

“Despite the male being uncooperative for medical treatment and maybe not fully understanding the circumstances surrounding the life saving measures that Deputy Cardell took to save him, we know he has people in this world who love him and that would be grateful for Deputy Cardell’s efforts,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

“If you are suffering from drug abuse, we encourage you to seek help, because the next time, there may not be a Deputy Cardell or others around to bring you back to life,” the post continued.
