CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — A former Georgia state trooper was indicted Thursday by a grand jury for his involvement in a crash that killed two teenage girls.
Kylie Lindsey, 17, and Isabella Chinchilla, 16, were in the back seat of a Nissan that collided with the Georgia State Patrol Trooper Anthony Schott's vehicle on Highway 78 in Carroll County in 2015.
The State Patrol said the car turned in front of the trooper at Holly Springs Road.
Authorities said Scott, 26, was driving 90 mph in a 55 mph zone just seconds before the crash. The GSP said his cruiser was going about 65 mph when it hit the car. He was not responding to a call.
"There's no reason for anyone to be doing that, let alone an officer who is sworn to serve and protect," said Chinchilla's aunt, Tracy Tatum.
Scott was fired following the crash.
He has been indicted of seven charges, including second-degree vehicular homicide and violation of oath of office. Four of the charges are felonies.
"We're so happy with the citizens who were on that grand jury," Tatum said.
Two previous attempts by the Carroll County district attorney to indict Scott ultimately failed. Scott's attorney said he's ready to fight this third try.
"We are disappointed that the state has chose to present this for the third time. We believe that's illegal. We believe that's an unauthorized indictment and we intend to fight it," Mac Pilgrim said.
The victims' families said they will keep fighting too.
"We lost two of the most beautiful souls and we'll never get them back," Tatum said.
Scott will likely turn himself in within the next few days.
