CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office wants neighbors to be aware of a scam targeting neighbors them through court summons.

CCSO officials say scammers are contacting victims, saying they missed a “federal court summons and now must pay fines or fees using Bitcoin or other digital currencies to avoid arrest.”

Here are some things law enforcement officials want you to be aware of if you are contacted by a potential scammer:

  • Law enforcement officials will never contact you to demand payment for any reason, including demanding Bitcoin or any other digital cryptocurrencies.
  • Court summons is handled through official processes, not random phone calls or threats.
  • If you receive a phone call demanding or threatening you with court summons, you should hang up immediately and report it to law enforcement.

Believe you are a victim of a scam? You’re asked to contact the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at 770-830-5916.
