CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Mystery continues to surround how a mother and baby ended up dead inside their home.

Deputies went to the family's Cherokee County home after getting a call from a worried relative. A toddler is the only person deputies found alive in the house.

A neighbor identified the mother as Holly Whitley, 31.

Neighbors said Whitley has two children.

“I got kids, so it’s very painful, just to know that a little baby died. His mother…” one neighbor said, not identifying himself.

He told Channel 2's Rikki Klaus that she ran past his house on Cedar Mill Crossing and waved hello as usual the night before deputies found her dead, along with an infant.

Deputies said Tuesday that a family member requested investigators check on Whitley.

The Sheriff’s Office said they found a 2-year-old girl alive in the home, unharmed. They say no foul play is suspected.

“To have an answer so quick is very surprising. I would hope that they would do their due diligence to try to find out actually what happened to give people in our neighborhood a little closure on the situation,” Will said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab.

Klaus pressed for more details, but deputies won’t release any more information until the cause of death is determined.
