Judge tells UGA football star accused of rape he couldn’t set bond over technicality

ATHENS, Ga. — A University of Georgia football star accused of rape remains behind bars in the Athens-Clarke County Jail after a judge said he legally could not set a bond in the case.

Adam Anderson turned himself in to police Wednesday night. He and his attorney insist he’s innocent.

Anderson is a linebacker for the university’s football team. He went before a magistrate judge Thursday, virtually.

The judge told him he could not give him bond.

“The charge of rape is one where bond can only be set by a superior court judge, and I’m a magistrate judge. So today I do not have the authority to give bond in this case,” the judge told Anderson.

Anderson said he understood the charge and did not have any questions for the judge.

His attorney told him she wanted to get him bail as soon as possible.

“What we plan to do today is file a petition for bond,” Anderson’s attorney said. “We certainly want to have the hearing as soon as we can.”

The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 29. According to the police report, a woman said she went to Anderson’s home in Athens to have some drinks. She told police she fell asleep and then later woke up to the 22-year-old assaulting her.

She said the incident was non-consensual and made a report with the police department later that day.

Anderson played in Georgia’s 34-7 victory over Florida on Oct. 30, the day after the rape allegation was made. The team traveled to Jacksonville on the evening of Oct. 29.

Anderson has been suspended from the football team. He was expected to be a first-round pick during the NFL draft.
