NEW ORLEANS, La. — A University of Georgia student who was severely injured in the New Orleans terror attack on New Year’s Day.
Elle Eisele was among the more than 30 who was injured when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, drove down Bourbon Street, killing 14 other people. Jabbar himself died after being shot by police officers after he opened fire on them.

Eisele, a Fort Myers woman, was in New Orleans with friend and former classmate Steele Idelson, who was also injured. UGA officials initially reported that Eisele was critically injured in the attack.
On Friday, Eisele posted a statement on her Instagram story, which was obtained by ABC-affiliate WZVN in Fort Myers, saying she was grateful that she and Idelson both survived the attack.
“With more gratitude than you can fathom, I wanted to let my friends and family know that I am fighting and I am healing. Most importantly, I am alive, and I am so thankful that God spared Steele and myself. I’m reading your messages, and I’m thankful for your support and love and one day soon, I’ll be replying to you! Please keep praying for all of us survivors”

On Wednesday afternoon after the attack, UGA President Jere W. Morehead confirmed one student, later identified as Eisele, was critically injured.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating attack in New Orleans overnight, and I extend my sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this terrible tragedy.
At this point, we have learned that a University of Georgia student was critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment. I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community. I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured.
As we continue to hold the victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers, the University will do everything in its power to support those in our community who have been impacted by this unspeakable event.”
