ATHENS, Ga. — For those who love to bike, hike or just take a leisurely stroll, a new proposed trail would take from Athens all the way out to the Georgia coast.
The trail will begin with the Firefly trail in Athens, which, once connected, would create an adventure between northeast and coastal Georgia, ending at Tybee Island, WJCL-TV reports.
Mary Charles Howard, with the Georgia nonprofit Hi-Lo, told the TV station that she came up with the idea to bring more to underdeveloped areas.
“We would go through a lot of rural communities. A lot of these communities need investment. They may be drying up or de-populating, and we see this trail as a boost to economic development,” Charles Howard told WJCL.

She said that she is meeting with small communities that the trail will go through to try and make the path a reality, with the help of Caila Brown and her team at Bike Walk Savannah.
“The Hi-Lo trail is really great and is an emphasis on what we have been trying to do here in Savannah as well. Not only is it great for people who may be riding long distances or maybe running long distances, but it is a great way to have a foundational route through communities,” Brown said.
Howard told the TV station that if all cities and towns get on board with the project, the trail could be completed before 2030.
