CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Clayton County Police Department is urging residents to stop celebrating events, like the New Year, with gunfire.

According to police, at midnight on New Year’s Eve, officers responded to reports of celebratory gunfire on Brookview Way.

When police arrived, they found someone on the side of the road with a rifle in hand.

“Thankfully, officers were able to safely identify the shooter and secure multiple firearms, along with the shell casings, without incident,” police said.

When they asked, the suspect admitted that he performed the same “dangerous behavior every year on New Year’s Eve.”

Police said celebratory gunfire is extremely unsafe and that while it may seem fun, the risk to people, property and overall public safety are not worth it.

“Year after year, unwitting residents wake up on New Year’s Day to discover damage to their homes and vehicles from falling bullets,” Clayton County police said. “In Georgia, offenses against public safety such as reckless discharge of a firearm can lead to criminal charges and fines.”

The department also urged residents to be mindful and think about their neighbors before firing guns into the air.

“Find a safe, responsible way to ring in the New Year. Let’s make 2025 safer for everyone!” police said.
