Crews work around the clock to help keep roads safe around metro Atlanta

METRO ATLANTA — All over metro Atlanta, workers are making every effort to keep as many roads open as possible after snow and freezing rain created dangerous driving conditions.

For the first time in years, snow made many parts of Georgia impassable.

Between two and four inches of snow shut down many roads in Paulding County on Friday morning and made driving nearly impossible.

In Gwinnett County, Andrea Holt and her husband were helping stranded motorists by offering free tows out of a tough spot.

“We pulled up 15 vehicles,” she said. “We got them out of there.”

Even in areas where conditions were relatively good throughout the day, the night and dropping temperatures bring new challenges.

“What’s going to happen is all this slush is going to turn to ice. Which is what we don’t want,” Coweta County Deputy Fire Chief Greg Shinkle told Channel 2′s Michael Doudna. “And people won’t be able to see the ice, right you know, it turns to black ice, so they’re not going to see it, and they will get into a curve or they’re going too fast, and they’ll hit another car, go off in a ditch and that’s our concerns. "

Throughout metro Atlanta areas will see as much as a half inch of ice.

Authorities ask drivers to stay off the road if at all possible, for their own safety and so crews can do their jobs to keep roads safe.
