Officials worked to put the fire out and said there were no injuries suffered because of the fire.
Channel 2′s Veronica Griffin talked to Harry and Stephanie Douglas, the couple runs the nonprofit Douglas Brothers Foundation out the commercial duplex.
“My neighbor called and said, ‘Hey your building is on fire,’” Harry Douglas said. “When I got here it was like six fire trucks and a whole lot of police officers and the building was up in smoke.”
On Sunday, the nonprofit hosted more than 350 people in its parking lot, providing a hot meal ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
“It was awesome, to hear the testimony of the people who are really in need. We had a couple of veterans pull in and say, ‘I think this is going to be my only Thanksgiving meal. Thank you so much.’ So, it was a pleasure to serve the community,” Stephanie Douglas said.
The non-profit gives back year-round, including their upcoming Holiday Treat Festival next month.
The couple told Channel 2 News they lost everything in the fire but still plan to host the event and could really use the support of the community to help make things happen.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
