CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A local county commissioner says his body is here doing the work of his constituents, but his heart is in California where his mother’s home was destroyed by the wildfires.
Channel 2’s Tom Jones spoke to Clayton County Commissioner Demont Davis about his mother losing everything.
Davis sent Jones video of some of the destruction in his mother’s neighborhood in the city of Altadena.
The video shows houses reduced to rubble.
“My mother lost everything,” Davis said.
His mother had to be evacuated before the fire decimated her home.
“It’s worse than bad. I use the analogy it’s dying alive. You know I’ve died but I’m still alive,” Davis said. “My heart is there. It is. Because I can’t see, I can’t hear and I can’t touch.”

Jones also talked to local saxophonist and entrepreneur Isaiah Tatum.
His second home in Malibu was destroyed by the fires. He flew there to see the destruction.
“Oh my goodness. Seeing it is just, I mean, tears just start coming out of your eyes,” Tatum said.
Tatum said he initially got word from his property manager that his home was on fire. He sent him video. Tatum knew everything was gone.
“I lost everything out there,” Tatum said.
He also lost three cars, sentimental pictures, memorabilia, and a saxophone among other items.
“I know people say you got insurance and all of that kind of stuff, but you can’t get back things that mean a lot to you,” Tatum said.
Tatum and Davis said they want to help others get back on their feet.
Tatum said despite his losses, he is blessed.
“Luckily, I still got my life and I got other properties and I’m here,” Tatum said.
Tatum wants to have a benefit concert to help those in need.
Davis has partnered with two local churches and set up a website for people to donate to help those in need.
