Travelers changing flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta ahead of winter storm

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Several city and state agencies and entities are preparing for the potential winter weather slated to impact North Georgia Friday and through the weekend, and that includes Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Officials with the Atlanta airport said they prepare throughout the year with drills and updating their plans to ensure they’re ready for any issues the winter weather may cause.

However, some travelers told Channel 2′s Eryn Rogers they aren’t taking their chances with the potential impending winter storm.

“I decided last night to change my flight, and it took me a couple tries because I think everyone had the same idea as me,” Annika Grace, who’s flying back to Connecticut for her last semester of her senior year at Yale said.

She told Channel 2 Action News that there weren’t many seats left when she rebooked.

“With the incoming winter storm, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get to school on time since I start on Monday, so I decided to move it up a day and avoid any possibility of my flight getting delayed and missing the first day of class because that’s not the best way to start the year,” Grace said.

Other travelers had the same thought.

“We were supposed to fly out on Sunday, then we saw the weather coming in and said we’re leaving now, we’re going south,” said traveler Sherrie Taylor.

Taylor and her husband Richard are heading to San Juan to escape the winter weather.

“We don’t mind a couple days on the beach,” Richard Taylor said.

Atlanta Airport officials are urging passengers to follow their lead.

“If your plans are flexible, do consider perhaps rescheduling your flight,” Alnissa Ruiz-Craig, the ATL Airport Media Relations Manager, told Channel 2 Action News.

However, if travelers can’t, they said their facilities will be operational, and they will have concession areas open.

“Making sure that our de-icing trucks and any requests by the airlines for de-icing are filled, that our fueling operations are operational, and making sure our staffing plans are in place for 12-hour shifts,” Ruiz-Craig said.

Ruiz-Craig is also encouraging people to check their flight status with their airline before they leave for the airport. She said the airlines will alert people of any cancelations or delays ahead of time.
