Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation works to shape young minds as new year starts

MORROW, Ga. — Everyone knows Steve Harvey. He’s a talk show host, game show host, comedian and family man.

But the West Virginia native is also a mentor of young men. At a recent mentoring camp from the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation in Morrow, Channel 2′s Karyn Greer got a look at how they’re helping shape young minds.

“The students that are participating today are students representing the Morehouse Lab school,” Dr. Artesius Miller, founder of Utopian Academy for the Arts, said. “This is an exclusive relationship that the Utopian Academy for the Arts has with Morehouse College, we’re very proud to say that the youngest part of the Morehouse College community are enrolled right here at the Utopian Academy for the Arts High School.”

Many of those young men have been part of the mentoring camp and are already looking forward to college.

The young men mentored by the foundation’s camp are from grades 10-12 and are part of the Utopian Academy for the Arts Morehouse Lab School program.

Miller said the academy was excited about their partnership with the Harvey Foundation, which they’ve been part of for 11 years.

While the Harveys weren’t at the camp when Greer visited, they made sure young men just like the ones in the camp were there to answer questions and help prepare them for the challenges ahead like peer pressure, learning how to make good decisions and how to handle time management, among others.

For the foundation, it’s all about helping young people succeed.

Greer visited the second session of the mentoring camp in Morrow, and learned the Youth Empowerment Initiative will continue through 2025, with the Harveys dedicated to being there for the students even through college.
