CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police are investigating a stabbing reported at Jonesboro High School in Clayton County.

Student witnesses told Channel 2's Tom Regan that a fight behind the school led to the stabbing.

"It was like two fights at one time. It was like all of this confusion. I was shocked," a student said.

The Clayton County Fire Department confirmed to Channel 2 Action News the 15-year-old injured was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries after being wheeled out of the school gym.

The students said that the teen who committed the stabbing does not attend Jonesboro High and has not been found.

"The boy was closing, so he took out a knife and stabbed him, and both ran away," a student said.

The Clayton County School District confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that a fight involving four students happened before school started.

"As a result of the incident, one student was injured and as a precaution, the school was placed under a soft lock down. At no time were other students in danger and the school administrators have prepared a notice to send home to parents and guardians informing them of this matter," the district said in a response.

The mother of the injured teen wants to know who stabbed her son and why. The woman lives in Florida, and she told Channel 2 Action News her son is staying with a relative.

"I'm crying, nervous. I was at work when I got that call. I just dropped everything," Natasha Jones said. "The worst part is I'm not in arm's reach."

Jones said she spoke with her son on the phone at Grady Hospital.

"He's going to be OK," Jones said. "I want answers."

"It's tough. These kids need to settle down and get back to learning," parent David Patrick said.

School officials have not said if they have arrested the student behind the stabbing. They said at no time were other students in danger.
