COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Cobb County Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in a Powder Springs neighborhood.
Channel 2′s Chris Jose learned officers were initially preparing to serve a warrant to search the home and car belonging to a murder suspect identified as 19-year-old Samuel David Mallard.
The GBI said officers found Mallard driving his car in the 1400 block of Chaseway Circle when he tried to “to elude officers in his vehicle, but his car was stopped by CCPD vehicles.”
During the encounter, officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Mallard was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
The police department said there is “no danger to the surrounding neighborhood.”
Authorities said the suspect was accused of a series of violent crimes in the county.
Jose asked Cobb County Chief Tim Cox how the man threatened officers. Cox said the matter is under investigation by the GBI.
Jose learned Mallard is no stranger to officers. He was accused of impersonating officers at least a half-dozen times.
He was also arrested on suspicion of knocking on a door, posing as a U.S. marshal.
Cox said there’s an active search for other people involved in the murder Mallard was accused of being involved. Police have at least one person in custody.
“There are other suspects that we are in the process of interviewing and looking for,” Cox said.
