1 dead, 4 first responders hurt after 2 teens fall through ice while playing on frozen Kennesaw lake

KENNESAW, Ga. — A teenager is dead and another was hospitalized after the two boys feel through an icy Kennesaw lake they were playing on Wednesday night, according to the Cobb County Fire Department.

Four first responders were also treated for extensive cold exposure during the rescue operation.

Kennesaw and Cobb County police, as well as Cobb County firefighters, responded to a 911 call on Lakeshore Overlook around 5:15 p.m.

Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell was at Ellison Lake off of Ellison Lakes Drive on Wednesday night, where police told her the of boys were playing on the ice when it gave way.

Police officers were able to rescue one 16-year-old boy from the icy water. He was taken to the hospital. His identity and condition have not been released.

A Fire Department rescue boat had to search the lake for the second boy for more than an hour. He was recovered around 6:50 p.m. and paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead.

Four rescue personnel were treated at the scene for extensive cold exposure. Surface water temperatures were as low as 28 degrees and first responders were in the water for up to an hour and 20 minutes.

One first responder was taken to the hospital for treatment for hypothermia. Another was treated for abrasions sustained during the rescue effort. All have since been released from medical care.

Fire officials say the other boy involved in this incident was in stable condition, although they say they did not know whether he was still at a hospital.

Georgia State Patrol also responded to the scene with one of its helicopters to assist with the incident.
