Bill to create referendum for City of Mableton passes Georgia House

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow voters to decide whether or not to create the City of Mableton in Cobb County.

House Bill 839, which was sponsored by Rep. Erica Thomas, would create a ballot referendum for the incorporation of Mableton in a special election.

The bill will head to the Georgia Senate, which could vote on the issue as early as Tuesday.

Mableton is one of four proposed new cities in Cobb County.

The other proposed cities include East Cobb, Vinings and an area that covers most of West Cobb that would become a new city called “Lost Mountain.”

“I want to thank my colleagues in the Georgia House of Representatives for showing their bipartisan support of this resident-led cityhood effort,” Thomas said in a news release. “This community is so tight-knit that residents already believe that Mableton is a city. Residents have fought long and hard to establish a local government for themselves, and I am proud to carry this legislation on their behalf.”
