Mableton pushing ahead towards cityhood, neighbors still showing concerns

MABLETON, Ga. — The City of Mableton will soon have a mayor and six city council members.

Early voting for the special election begins at the end of this month.

One group is pushing to break away from the city altogether.

“We need a mayor, a city council. We need somebody more local to understand and what our problems are - somebody who lives in the area,” resident Hubert Thompson told Channel 2′s Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell.

That’s why Thompson voted yes for Mableton cityhood back in November. Now, he’s looking forward to seeing the new city take shape.

“I think there can be improvements that can be made if we do have a city and not relying on the county,” Thompson said.

Two candidates were disqualified after their checks bounced during the application process.

The group “De-Annex Mableton” says it collected more than 3,000 signatures from residents that don’t want to be a part of the new city.
