COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 15-year-old Harrison High School student told Cobb County police that a male student raped her inside one of the girls’ bathrooms.

The girl reported the alleged incident earlier in May.

“It’s really unexpected. That’s not something that goes on around here,” Harrison High School senior Sam Harris said.

According to the accuser, the male student followed her into the bathroom and sexually assaulted her.

The Cobb County School District released a statement:

“We are aware of a warrant issued for one of our students, alleging a heinous crime, and are cooperating fully with the Cobb County Police Department. Due to the ongoing investigation and laws regarding student privacy, we are unable to share more except that we are confident our campus is secure and the safety of our students continues to be our primary focus.”

Tuesday, Channel 2′s Audrey Washington asked students if they feel safe at the school, considering the allegations.

“I think students should feel safe because you’re in a school and there are plenty of people surrounding you who want you to be safe,” Harris said.

On Wednesday, attorneys representing the accused student sent a news release with the statement. The student’s attorneys denied the rape allegations and said the two teens had consensual sex in the bathroom.

“It is unfortunate that the school and law enforcement did not conduct a thorough investigation before seeking an arrest warrant for this young man. After everything comes to light, we expect this young man to be fully exonerated of this heinous allegation.”
