Cobb County Animal Shelter overcrowded, asking public to come adopt a dog or cat

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A local animal shelter is reaching out asking people to adopt more dogs and cats.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes was at the cobb county animal shelter learning how you can find the right pet for you.

Shelter officials said last week was tough for them after 200 animals came in and the shelter was already dealing with overcrowding.

So at this point, they are asking the public to just consider adopting one of these dogs or cats.

Channel 2 Action News spoke to the operations manager, Jacob Arnold. Arnold has been at the shelter for 13 years and has seen the ups and downs of animal shelters.

Although he’s encouraging folks to come in -and adopt a pet, he still wants them to take their time when choosing a pet.

He told Channel 2 Action News they have had situations where people end up adopting the wrong pet for their household and they end up bringing them back.

“That’s why we like folks to make appointments and come in. It’s not a snap decision, it’s a pet you are going to have 10 to 15 years so we want them to make the correct decision,” Arnold said. “So we want them to ask questions of our officers and visit with the pet and if they have a pet at home already - we ask them to bring it in and do a meet and greet.”

The shelter is closed on Mondays but they have a mobile adoption unit.

Adoptions are free on Mondays and on other days you can adopt a pet for just $20, which includes all the shots and the microchip.
