COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County couple are trying to find out if someone at the post office is forging signatures.
The Barker family showed Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston a piece of U.S. Postal Service stationary. On the paper was a signature. However, that signature did not belong to Joseph Barker.
“I was shocked,” Barker's wife, Cynthia, said. “I said, ‘Who signed for it?’ and she looked at it and said, ‘Barker.’”
The Barkers were on vacation and returned home to check their mailbox. They say they found time-sensitive certified mail inside.
“Certified mail usually requires a signature and a return receipt,” Barker said.
Joseph Barker said the signature on the sheet did not match his signature, so he went to the local post office to get answers.
“When she said, ‘The postal worker must have signed for it,’ I was shocked. I’ve never heard of anything like that before,” Joseph Barker said.
The Barkers rushed and responded to the certified mail, but also continued to push to find out who signed their name.
“She kind of implied it was laziness. She implied that, not wanting to get out of the truck and go to the door,” Cynthia Barker said.
“You can’t forge people’s signatures. That’s a felony,” Joseph Barker said.
“If it happened to us, how many other people has it happened to?” Cynthia Barker asked.
The following statement was given to Channel 2 Action News: “The Postal Service takes pride in delivering the mail swiftly, safely and accurately. This complaint of improper handling of U.S. Mail is being taken seriously and we are looking into the issue.”
