COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A historic house and landmark in Cobb County is on sale for $1, but there’s a catch.
The historic McAfee House on Bells Ferry Road and Ernest W. Barrett Parkway is for sale by its owner, and for now being transferred to Cobb Landmarks in a move to preserve it.
The home was built in 1864, according to Cobb Landmarks, and they want to find a buyer who will restore the house, but in order to get it for that single dollar sale, potential buyers have to be willing to both restore it, and relocate it.
According to the organization, “Through an application process, Cobb Landmarks is seeking individuals and organizations interested in relocating and restoring the house.”

“The house is being offered for $1.00 (USD) to the applicant with the most compelling submission. In order to be considered, interested parties must complete an online questionnaire,” Cobb Landmarks said. “Applications will be evaluated by a committee consisting of Cobb Landmarks trustees, realtors, and construction and engineering professionals.”
For the successful buyer of the McAfee House, Cobb Landmarks said the home will have to be protected with a preservation easement so that the building’s exterior “retains its historic integrity,” as well as making sure the house is protected from future demolition.
Those interested in purchasing the house and moving it will have until Jan. 17 to apply for consideration, and the successful buyer will know they’ve gotten the house by Jan. 31.
After that, whoever gets the McAfee House will have until May 15 to move the building off the current property.
