COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Crews will begin pretreating roads across Cobb County on Thursday ahead of a winter storm that Severe Weather Team 2 forecasts will move into the area on Friday.
Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell dropped by hardware stores where managers told her that families were collecting supplies faster than they can get them in stock.
“So far, we’ve been selling everything, pretty much everything weather related,” William Whitfield, manager of East Cobb Ace Hardware Store, said.

Whitfield says the store is sold out of sleds and a shipment of 8,000 pounds of salt is on its way as families buy up whatever they can ahead of the storm.
“We are selling a lot of ice melt, a lot of windshield scrapers and stuff like that, lot of heaters, lot of propane,” he said.
While families prepare to hunker down, Cobb County Department of Transportation crews are making sure they are prepared to treat and clear roads throughout the county.
“When we are brining, we always have chase vehicles and we ask people to stay back from those vehicles to give our brine trucks and salt spreaders the area and space they need to put that out safely,” said J.D. Lorenz, Cobb County DOT Deputy Director.

Lorenz says his team is ready to get to work.
“We are going to start pretreating the roadways on Thursday afternoon. That will continue through the night,” he explained. “We will switch over to more of a brine mixture to a material that has salt and sand in it probably in the early hours of Friday morning.”
All county facilities will close starting at 5 a.m. on Friday.
