Cobb police credit technology and intuition for recent run of murder suspect arrests

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Cobb County Police Department says technology along with a handful of other tools helped them capture three murder suspects who were wanted for crimes outside of the County.

Police say each suspect had been on the run before officers tracked them down.

“There was a murder suspect out of DeKalb County, Fulton County and Villa Rica who had victimized people. They just happened to be traveling through Cobb County,” said Cobb County Police Department PIO Officer Aaron Wilson.

Police were able to catch Karlton Sirmons in November.

Officers said Sirmons led them on a brief chase before they caught him. He is accused of shooting three people, killing one and assaulting a child in Villa Rica.

Cobb County Police said their license plate readers flagged Sirmons’ car when he entered the county.

Ten days later, Cobb police tracked down yet another murder suspect. They are crediting technology and an officer’s intuition for catching Derrick Anderson.

“Because of the officer’s ability to investigate while conducting a traffic stop, he was able to locate the passenger in the vehicle who was connected to a murder somewhere else,” said Officer Wilson.

Investigators said Anderson led police on a high-speed chase before crashing and running off, police caught him the following day.

“How this officer was able to do it is honestly pretty creative. But he used the tools to his disposal and was able to figure out the guy in the vehicle is connected to a murder somewhere else,” said Officer Wilson.

Wilson told Channel 2′s Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell that Flock cameras helped police make the third arrest of a suspect who was wanted out of Dekalb County.

“Thanks to technology that we have at our disposal officers were able to track down these murder suspects and bring them into custody all in the span of 30 days,” said Officer Wilson.
