COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that the driver accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian has turned himself in.
Gabriel Cammon, 20, came forward to Smyrna police after he saw Channel 2 Cobb Bureau Chief Chris Jose report on Thursday's deadly crash.
"He’s a good man. He’s always been a good boy to his mother. I hate to see this happen to him," Cammon's ex-stepfather Ben Tidwell said.
Police said the victim Raul Dominguez was trying to cross a busy stretch of South Cobb Drive when Cammon hit him with his pickup truck. Dominguez later died at a hospital.
Tidwell admitted to Jose that his former stepson made a mistake when he didn't stay to help.
"I’m sure he was frightened. He wanted to go home to say goodbye to his family," Tidwell said.

Smyrna police say Cammon was behind the wheel of a white Chevrolet Silverado when he hit Dominguez in the center turn lane. The victim was not in the crosswalk.
A witness told Jose that the driver got out of the car but then panicked and left the scene.
A 911 caller took a picture of the damaged truck and gave investigators a unique description of the license plate which read “Chevrolet USA 1.”
"Without that, we wouldn’t have gotten this guy," Smyrna police Sgt. Louis Defense told Jose.
Cammon is charged with felony hit and run, but not vehicular homicide. Police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
