COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Counseling services will be available at a Cobb County middle school after a student shot herself at school on Wednesday.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. at Lindley Middle School, which went into a Code Red lockdown.

“A student at Lindley Middle School tragically used a firearm to commit self-harm, prompting a Code Red. School administrators, along with a Cobb County School District police officer, responded immediately and secured the weapon. The code red was lifted once police confirmed there was no specific threat to fellow students,” a district spokesperson said. “The student is in critical condition, surrounded by their family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them.

It was a tense situation as parents and grandparents rushed to reunite with their students on campus.

Michael Spikes has a great-granddaughter who attends the school and said he sat in his car nervous as he waited to get her.

“My heart’s beating 100 miles an hour. It’s my great-grandbaby who’s in there,” Spikes said.

Families have voiced their concerns for the student, but also want to know how she brought a gun on campus.

Cobb County Police confirmed that the school has no metal detectors. They say they don’t know at this time how the girl, who has not been identified, was able to get the gun inside the school. Police did not say what kind of gun was used.

They have interviewed the girl’s friends and teachers in hope of getting some answers.

Police and school officials are urging parents to check in with their children.

“I also encourage everyone to prioritize the emotional well-being of our children, who often carry burdens that may not always be apparent. Resources are available to support them during this difficult time,” Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said. “In Cobb County, visit findhelp.cobbcounty.gov for local assistance.
