Family of Vincent Truitt suing Cobb County for $150 million over teen’s ‘unreasonable death’

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a teen shot and killed by Cobb County police have filed a lawsuit against the county for $150 million over the teen’s “unreasonable death.”

Vincent Truitt, 17, was shot twice in the back by a Cobb County police officer following a July 2020 car chase near the Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park. Truitt died at Grady Memorial Hospital the next day.

Investigators have contended that Truitt presented a threat to the officer when the teen got out of the car holding a gun.

A grand jury cleared the officer involved in the deadly shooting in February.

The district attorney’s office stated the grand jury was shown several hours’ worth of video that included witness statements as well as police body camera video before it made its decision.

The attorneys for the family have filed suit against the county, saying Truitt posed no danger to the officer, let alone an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm, and that Truitt’s back was turned at the time he was shot.

“The family has suffered long enough. We look forward to fully litigating this case,” attorney Gerald Griggs said in a news release Wednesday.

The family’s legal team is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday morning where we expect to learn more about the lawsuit. The suit is said to be the largest lawsuit filed in the state of Georgia in an officer-involved shooting.
