COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A man sitting in a chair in his bedroom narrowly avoided a tree crashing through the roof.

It happened at a home on Lake Vista Court in Kennesaw as strong winds moved through Friday morning. We first showed you the damage on Channel 2 Action News at Noon.

“Things were nice and quiet other than the wind and all of a sudden I heard a big boom,” Jeffrey Mohr told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell.

The loud boom was a tree that landed on top of Jeffrey and Darlene Mohr’s bed. Jeffrey was sitting in a chair right next to the bed. Darlene was in another room.

“And I just rolled to my right off the chair and headed into the laundry room to get out the way,” he said. “Yelled for my wife and I said you need to get in here.”

Trees like the one that fell on the Mohr house was just one of many weather-related jobs that Top Tier Trees responded to in Cobb County.

“The first heavy winds and failures started about 3 a.m.,” owner David Hall said. “As people wake up to these things, we get the call.”

But the Mohr’s tree is by far the biggest job the company had Friday.

“It was severely compromised at the base with deep set rot and the high winds Just structurally compromised the tree,” Hall said.

The Mohrs are just thankful they weren’t hurt. You can’t help but notice the Christmas decoration that fell from their ceiling when the tree crashed.

“It’s a Christmas angel but God took care of us. I mean that’s the truth. God took care of us,” Darlene said.

“This is where we were having Christmas, so ya know. We’ll see if she still cooks a turkey breast and does all that stuff,” Jeffrey said.

It will be awhile before the Mohrs can sleep in their bedroom.
