Local high school marching band to represent state in Hawaii

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Behind every high school marching band there are proud parents.

“We have some of the greatest kids in the county.  I joked one day that I’m a roadie for the best band in the world, because my kid is in it,” parent Jamil Lucy said.

The Wheeler High School band in Cobb County has earned a great honor. They will perform in the National Vietnam Veterans Day Parade.

For some, it’s personal.

“My father is a Viet Nam Veteran.  To be able to take the band to play, it’s a lot of excitement,” assistant band director Anthony Higdon said.

The event will be held in Hawaii. That’s where clarinet player Najilah Nichols was born.

“Yeah. My mom and dad were stationed there in the military,” Nichols said.

These students know the history. They’re proud to be part of a parade for veterans who had never been given one.

“For us to go and honor them for their sacrifice—whether you supported the war or not—is super important and it’s an honor for us to go,” colorguard captain Leiana Lucy said.

It’s a very expensive trip: $3,000 per person, with 65 students going.

The band’s booster club raised enough to provide each with around $450. They hope some corporate sponsors can step up to help students cover the rest of the costs.

The band is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu on March 25.
