Marietta man, 6-year-old among 5 dead in North Carolina plane crash

MANTEO, N.C. — A Marietta man was among those killed when a plane went down near the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

A Cirrus SR-22 airplane crashed into a wooded area at the National Park around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Officials said the plane caught fire after it crashed.

None of the five people on board survived the crash. On Tuesday, the National Park Service identified the victims as:

  • Shashwat Ajit Adhikari, 31, of Silver Spring, Maryland
  • Jason Ray Campbell, 43, Southern Pines, North Carolina
  • Kate McAllister Neely, 39, of Southern Pines, North Carolina
  • Matthew Arthur Fassnacht, 44, of Marietta, Georgia
  • An unidentified 6-year-old child

While NPS did not identify the child who died, Cobb County Schools confirmed the child attended Sope Creek Elementary School.

“Our hearts are with the Sope Creek community following their recent loss. We understand this is a very difficult time for our staff and young learners and so District staff will be available to support them. We ask that the media provide the school community time to grieve.”

The school did not confirm the student’s name.

WVEC 13 News, Channel 2′s ABC affiliate, spoke with a witness who saw the crash on her way to the store.

“At the beginning, I thought he was really high, and all of a sudden, he just went down a little too quick,” Nadia Popruzhenko told WVEC. “This one went down so quick that I thought it was too low.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating what caused the plane to crash.
