Metro city councilman charged with DUI, taking off after allegedly causing car crash

KENNESAW, Ga. — A Kennesaw City Council member is accused of driving drunk. Police say he also rear-ended a car and then took off. Police caught up to him at a brewery that he owns.

Both victims managed to get license plate information that proved to be vital in police cracking this case.

“I think that our elected officials should operate at a higher standard,” said Lauren Sturdivant, who lives in Cobb County.

Police say Robert Sinclair got behind the wheel after he had been drinking, then took off after rear-ending a car, which led to a chain reaction.

Police say the victims helped them track Sinclair down.

License plate information led investigators to Sinclair’s business, Dry County Brewery.

Police say when Sinclair showed up, he held onto his truck to keep his balance.

At one point during the night, police say they smelled alcohol on Sinclair’s breath.

But according to the police report, Sinclair told police he did stop after the crash, but left because they took too long.

Investigators say Sinclair never called 911.

“He should’ve resigned and if he doesn’t resign, he needs to be removed,” another person who lives in Cobb County said.

Channel 2′s Michele Newell tried calling Sinclair to get his side of the story, but he didn’t answer.

The City of Kennesaw operates under a code of ordinances. If the mayor or any council member is indicted for a felony, the council can vote to have the city attorney file a petition with the superior court of Cobb County to move forward with a suspension, pending the outcome of the case.

Newell spoke with the mayor of Kennesaw over the phone Monday. He told her he is aware of what happened.

There are no plans to take any kind of action against Sinclair based on the city ordinance because the charges against Sinclair are misdemeanors.
