More than 10 cited in Cobb County for speeding in school zones, deputies say

MARIETTA, Ga. — Now that school is starting back up, drivers are having to adjust to the new traffic flows across the metro Atlanta area.

In Cobb County, law enforcement officers urged drivers to keep an eye on their speed and slow down near schools.

The sheriff’s office said they were out by schools issuing citations for speeding while lights were flashing to watch speeds on the road.

Citations were issued by members of the sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension and Support Team.

According to deputies, more than 10 people were cited just in front of Smitha Middle School on Powder Springs Road.

The drivers who got ticketed were speeding in school zones while the lights were flashing to signal slower speeds for the area.

One driver was reportedly going more than twice the school zone speed limit, according to the deputies, hitting 52 miles per hour. School zones are 25 mph.

“School is officially back in session for Cobb County! Please remember to follow the posted speed limits when the yellow lights are flashing. The reduced speed keeps everyone safe during peak traffic around the schools,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
