Police uncover drugs, guns, cash after homeowner calls 911 to report burglary

AUSTELL, Ga. — A call about a home burglary led officers in the city of Austell to bags of drugs, guns and a stack of cash.

Police made the bust on Sunday in a neighborhood on Miller Road.

“It’s shocking because I have 16 great grandchildren,” a woman told Channel 2′s Chris Jose. She did not want to be identified because she lives on the same quiet street where Austell police said it made its biggest bust this year.

“We could’ve had a shootout right here in the middle of the street,” the long-time resident told Jose.

Officers showed up to the house after they got a call about a home break-in. They searched for a burglar, found a window open, and went inside to make sure it was safe, police said. Officers didn’t find anyone, but they came across the drugs and guns out in the open.

“It’s a large arrest. We seized a lot and got a lot of stuff off the street,” said Lt. Sharon Davis.

Davis and Austell police investigators gave Jose a look at the evidence on Monday.

Police said it was the resident of the home who called 911 to report a burglary. Officers identified the resident as Matthew York. He’s charged with numerous crimes for possession of drugs and guns with intent to distribute.

Cobb County jail records show York bonded out on Monday.
