COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A roofer is accused of charging customers hundreds of thousands of dollars for work he never completed.
The Cobb County contractor is facing criminal charges after allegedly scamming two people in Acworth for a total of $20,000.
Channel 2's Matt Johnson dug a little deeper and found more than 30 people who accused 45-year-old Michael Blossom of charging them for work and never completing it.
"He took advantage of a lot of people," Addie Butt told Johnson.
There are people in Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Paulding, and Cobb County with similar stories about the now out-of-business contracting company.
Only Acworth police have filed charges against Blossom and they said the case shows what can happen when contractors get paid before they start the job.
Butt said nearly $4,000 went toward getting a new roof. She spent the money in August and then never heard back from BLS General Contracting and she's not alone.
TRENDING STORIES:
Blossom was arrested Monday on two counts of felony conversion of payment charges.
He owned the now-defunct company, BLS, that filed for bankruptcy in October and listed 31 customers he owed money.
Out of $431,000 in listed liabilities, about $157,000 belonged to customers waiting for work to be done.
"They should have stopped cashing these checks," client James Barbieri said.
Barbieri said he sent nearly $5,000 to BLS in July after a salesperson came to his house to say he had defective shingles.
"It can happen to anybody," Barbieri said.
His insurance sent the money, but he said after BLS never did the work, getting someone to really replace the roof will cost out of pocket.
"They're going to say, 'Well we already paid you for a new roof,'" Barbieri said.
Johnson learned that Blossom's wife Amy filed for a new business license for "Dynamic Roofing" just a week before BLS filed for bankruptcy.
"People associated with this suspect have already opened up a new business. That's why we want the public to be aware," said Capt. Mark Cheatham with the Acworth Police Department.
Charlie Puckett, an owner at Dynamic Roofing, called Channel 2 Action News Wednesday night to deny any association with BLS. Amy Blossom will not be handling day-to-day operations within the company, he said.
Johnson went to Blossom's home and a man got out of a BMW and ignored his questions. A woman took Johnson's card and when he asked about the charges she said, "See you later.” Neither person was willing to identify themselves.
BLS had an active business license, and A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. The ex-client list includes men and women in their early 30s to individuals in their late 60s.
