COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Vice President Mike Pence is defending President Donald Trump’s performance following Tuesday night’s controversial debate and says he believes Trump won.

Channel 2′s Richard Elliot spoke exclusively with Pence following his appearance at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference that was held Wednesday at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

During his speech at the conference, Pence talked about defending religious freedoms.

Afterwards, Pence spoke to Elliot about the debate and coronavirus.

“President Trump has kept the promises that he has made to the American people,” Pence said. “The president took our case to the American people, but he also took the fight to Joe Biden.”

It was that fight that drew criticism from both sides as the president often interrupted Biden, and Biden called Trump a “clown” and “the worst president ever.”

Pence put his own spin on the debate, saying it showed Trump is a fighter.

“I think the American people saw a fighter last night. That fighter, I believe won the debate outright, but that’s exactly the kind of fighter they want in the White House for four more years,” Pence said.

The vice president is also head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, which announced Monday it’s sending 3 million rapid COVID-19 tests to Georgia before the end of the year.

Pence told Elliot that the tests will help keep schools open, which he thinks is critical to moving forward from the pandemic.

“As many schools across Georgia and across America have kids back in school, we want them to have the resources of these rapid test, that a school nurse can immediately identify anyone that might have symptoms,” Pence said.

The latest polls here in Georgia show Trump and Biden tied at 47%.

That’s why we’ve seen a big push by the president and now the vice president to try to woo Georgia voters.
