Woman held captive, beaten, raped by man on probation inside Cobb County storage unit

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A man is being held in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond after he allegedly physically and sexually assaulted a woman inside a storage unit.

It happened on Dec. 30 at SecurCare Self Storage on South Cobb Drive between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., according to court documents obtained by Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell.

Steven Obermeyer was arrested on Jan. 9 and is charged with rape, aggravated assault by strangulation, false imprisonment and battery. Police said Obermeyer and the victim know each other, which means the crime wasn’t random.

Newell spoke with a customer who is upset that a crime so heinous happened, especially in such a public place. He said he is also disappointed staff didn’t notify him that a crime occurred on the property.

Jail records show Obermeyer was on probation when he allegedly attacked and raped the victim inside a storage unit.

“That shouldn’t be happening period. no one should be violated. I’ll be up out of here by the end of the month. I’m unhappy, I’m unhappy about that situation. I don’t even know what’s going on in here” said customer Kerizmeh El.

Court documents show Obermeyer prevented the victim from opening the roll door of one of the units by strangling her. He is accused of physically, verbally and sexually assaulting the victim while she was trapped inside the unit.

“That’s a problem. That’s a problem right there. We shouldn’t have that. We are not going to have that,” said El.

It’s unclear if the storage unit belonged to the victim. Obermeyer is listed as homeless on jail records.

“We gotta put our foot down on any type of crime that’s happening like that,” said El.

El said, as a customer, he expects management to inform him when crimes happen on the property.

“I wouldn’t want that to happen to nobody, whoever is in here doing that. It’s mighty strange that there’s no notes up. Nobody said anything, if you ask me the place needs to be shut down,” said El.

Management hasn’t responded to a media request for a comment regarding the situation.
