COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Preschool students are joining in on the efforts to help children in war-torn Ukraine.
Tovah Cohen and Jake Perry may only be 5 years old, but they have compassion for children who live half a world away. “I hope they can find a new home and they get some new toys,” Jake said.
They attend Vinings Academy International Preschool in Cobb County. International is an appropriate part of the school’s name. Today’s lesson is the children of Ukraine. But these kids have already been talking about it.
“You’d be surprised. They’re 4 and 5 years old, but they get it,” school Director Denise Hambrick said.
Hambrick asked the kids what they would take with them if they were forced to leave their homes. They said coloring books and crayons. The school has now collected hundreds of both to send to Ukraine.
“They want to help. They want to do something. And they’re super excited about doing that,” Hambrick said
The care package will also include heartfelt, hand-written notes from the kids at Vinings Academy to the kids in Ukraine.
“I put a family and I drew lots of sunflower, and I wrote, ‘I love Ukraine,’” Tovah said.
The school’s donation is being sent to the nonprofit Save the Children, which has teams along the Ukrainian border with Poland.
