Convicted murderer charged in 2nd slaying 9 months after release

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga,None — A DeKalb County man, free just nine months from prison, is back behind bars after being accused of committing a second killing.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas was the only reporter there as members of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office's fugitive squad captured Samuel Hayes.

DeKalb County police wanted Hayes in connection with the Jan. 22 slaying of Joshua Grier.

In an arrest warrant, a DeKalb County police detective wrote that Hayes shot Grier three times in the head and once in the neck.

Grier's body was found alongside a lake near Stone Mountain.

Police said they believe the two were arguing over drugs.

DeKalb authorities said Hayes has been running a lot lately -- first, from the crime scene of Grier's death one month ago, and then from deputies Wednesday night.

"When he recognized the police, he bolted, so he ran, jumped over a few fences, took us on a pretty nice foot chase," DeKalb County Sheriff Deputy Sgt. Adrion Bell said.
