Police: 6-year-old accidentally shot in Atlanta, father flees

ATLANTA — Atlanta police tell Channel 2 Action News a 6-year-old accidentally shot and killed herself on Saturday.

The incident happened on the 1000 block of Martin St. SE, about a mile southeast of Turner Field.

Police tell Channel 2 Action News the father, Demargo Smith,  initially left the scene, however, spoke with detectives Saturday afternoon, police said.  

Smith, was charged with reckless conduct and taken to the Fulton County jail.
Authorities said Sunday that Ja’Mecca Smith “accidentally shot herself after finding a loaded handgun between sofa cushions” in the apartment where she was killed. 
It was initially reported that the girl was “non-responsive” and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Warren Pickard said shortly after noon that the girl’s body remained inside the home.
