Coweta sheriff lieutenant arrested for DUI, sheriff’s office says

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A Coweta County lieutenant was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

The sheriff’s office said the incident happened Monday morning.

According to Newnan Police, officers were trying to catch up to a truck that had run a red light on the bypass across Bullsboro Drive.

When officers conducted the traffic stop, they identified the driver as, Lt. Jeff Looney.

Newnan officials said when officers asked if Looney had been drinking, he told officers he had three beers.

Police said they could smell alcohol coming from Looney’s breath. His eyes were reportedly watery and his speech was slurred. Officers said Looney refused to take a sobriety test.

He was then arrested for DUI and booked into the Coweta County Jail.

According to officials, Looney has been with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office since March 1995. Since 2013 he has been a patrol lieutenant.

He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation.

“Sheriff Wood holds all employees to the highest standard and any act outside the law will not be tolerated,” the sheriff’s office said.
