City of Newnan opens donation center to help storm victims

NEWNAN, Ga. — The city of Newnan is accepting donations to help their storm-ravaged city.

Officials said the violent, long-track tornado that ripped through the city early Friday morning was an EF-4 storm with winds of about 170 mph.

In a Facebook post, the city said it will accept water, non-perishable foods, toiletries and other things along those lines. They do not want clothing.

There is a donation center set up at 1515 Lower Fayetteville Road, Newnan that will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

They ask that you please take the donations to the drop off center, not to the police department.

In a news release, The Salvation Army said it is delivering water, clean-up kits, hygiene kits and storage bins to the hardest-hit areas and will begin serving meals to first responders Friday evening.

“We continue to fully and carefully review and evaluate the situation,” says Director of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army of Georgia Division Lanita Lloyd. “Once we see exactly how these storms have impacted Georgia, we will deploy our resources as needed to help those in the most severely affected areas.”

The Salvation Army is also providing lunch for first responders and other disaster workers and distributing tarps in the Cedartown area, which also took a direct hit from the storms.
